President Donald Trump has introduced a new $500 billion investment plan called “Stargate”, designed to build artificial intelligence (AI) data centers across the United States.
During a January 21 press conference, Trump confirmed that the project’s first investors include OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle. Other contributors include MGX, while Microsoft, Arm, and Nvidia, were named as key technology partners.
He emphasized that Stargate could create “over 100,000 jobs” for American workers.

OpenAI clarified in a January 21 statement that the $400 billion will be allocated over the next four years to expand the initiative further.
Meanwhile, Masayoshi Son, the CEO of SoftBank, announced that $100 billion from the total funding would be used immediately to begin development.
Trump stressed the importance of keeping AI advancements within the US. He stated:
China is a competitor, others are competitors. We want it to be in this country, and we’re making it available.
OpenAI emphasized that the project aims to boost American industry and contribute to national security by ensuring the country’s leadership in AI development.
Stargate is also a step toward advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI), which OpenAI believes will benefit society. OpenAI stated:
This new step is critical on the path, and will enable creative people to figure out how to use AI to elevate humanity.
Construction has already started at Oracle’s facility in Abilene, Texas, which will house the first Stargate data centers. OpenAI noted that additional sites are being considered to support future expansions.
