Sony is celebrating 25 years since the launch of its robotic pet, Aibo, by introducing a blockchain-based version.
The new collection, called "Entertainment Robot Aibo", is available as a soulbound non-fungible token (NFT) on the Soneium blockchain.
Unlike regular NFTs, these cannot be sold or transferred, which reinforces the idea of a lasting connection between owners and their digital Aibo.

What is a DAO in Crypto? (Animated Explanation)
Aibo was launched in 1999 and marketed as a robot pet that could walk, bark, wag its tail, and interact with owners. Over the years, Sony released several improved models, which lowered costs and added new features. The latest version was introduced in 2018.
Anyone can mint these tokens for free on OpenSea, though they must cover a small gas fee. The minting process remains open until March 24. More than 9.8 million NFTs have been created, but there are only about 38,000 unique owners.
The decision to make Aibo a soulbound NFT aligns with its original purpose, according to a message shared in Soneium’s official Discord. The team explained that Aibo was never just a product but a companion, and the non-transferable nature of the NFT reflects that bond.
