Alphabet Inc, Google’s parent company, has reportedly started researching blockchain technology and how it can impact Web3. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, made a statement regarding blockchain research on Tuesday, February 1, while discussing the company’s vision for the future.

During the Alphabet Q4 2021 earnings call, Pichai elaborated on some of the plans that the company has for its products like YouTube and Google Cloud Services.
When asked about his views on Web3 and how Alphabet plans to approach this technology, Pichai mentioned that there are a few areas of interest for the company. Augmented reality (AR) was named as one of the key investments that can be used to improve services like YouTube, Google Maps, or Google Meet.
The web has always evolved, and it's going to continue to evolve. And as Google, we have benefited tremendously from open-source technologies, and so we do plan to contribute there.
Pichai brought special attention to the Cloud team’s achievements and said that this department was researching blockchain technology. He described blockchain as an “interesting and powerful technology” that will likely play a large role in the company’s future.
Just one example: our Cloud team is looking at how they can support our customers’ needs and building, transacting, storing value and deploying new products on blockchain based platforms.
Alphabet has not been as outspoken about Web3 developments and blockchain technology as some of its market competitors. Companies like Twitter, Meta, and Microsoft have publicly announced their plans for Web3, as well as crypto integrations. Pichai, on the other hand, made no mention of cryptocurrencies during the earnings call.
Last week, BitDegree reported Google Cloud’s plans to launch a new digital assets team. The team will be looking into ways to implement blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies as part of Cloud services.
