Trucker Protest Moves to Cryptocurrency Donations on Tallycoin

Donations in cryptocurrencies have excelled quite a bit as they have become a lot more accepted by the public. 2021 showed prominent results for charities that raised funds in crypto -  almost a 600% increase compared to 2020.

In fact, a group of protesting truckers in Canada, operating under the name Freedom Convoy Campaign, have started raising monetary support to tackle pandemic requirements like isolation and wearing masks.

The Bitcoin for Truckers campaign had initially started in the middle of January, and managed to raise $9M on GoFundMe. However, the platform pulled the plug on the trucker fundraiser after reports on violent protests emerged on local news outlets. 

GoFundMe came to the conclusion that its terms and conditions were broken by this campaign, and the platform reimbursed every donor on February 5th. This moved the Freedom Convoy Campaign towards cryptocurrencies.

Tallycoin is a fundraising platform that is built on the Bitcoin blockchain, with the main cryptocurrency for donations being Satoshi coins (SATS). Currently, the trucker campaign has over 3800 contributors, and raised over 870M SATS, which is almost $400K.

While the goal of 6.15 BTC was reached in just a couple of days, the previous Freedom Convoy Campaign on GoFundMe had over 20 times more funds raised in fiat money. Likewise, conversion rates and market fluctuations may alter the total amount raised. With that being said, BTC underwent a slight increase - 3.18% over the past 24 hours, averaging $42,709.56.
