World-renowned entertainment giant Disney has paved its way into the metaverse by patenting a technology that will be called the virtual world simulator.
Initially, the patent was posted earlier in July 2020, with the approval by the United States Patent and Trademark Office coming out only in late December of 2021.
Meanwhile, in a LinkedIn post by the head of Digital and Technology for Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Tilak Mandadi, he spoke about the upcoming technologies that will be introduced into Disney’s theme park environment.

With the pandemic still creeping around the corner, the representative of Disney talked about reinventing the theme park business, creating digital tools for remote engagement with customers, and "implementing new health and safety measures for the eventual reopening…"
While the future of the physical Disney theme park is unclear, the introduction of a virtual reality experience, or, as Mandadi calls it a "theme park metaverse", will bring the physical engagement "inside and outside the parks."
This will allow users to connect to the virtual world and each other via VR headsets and smartphones by entering Disney’s metaverse with exciting theme park experiences.
"The metaverse experiences are driven by technologies like computer vision, natural language understanding, AR, AI, and IoT – technologies that, while enabling the experiences, never get in the way of the experience itself." - T. Mandadi
Knowing that the approval of the patent came in only a few weeks ago, it is unclear whether Disney has started any early developments of their metaverse project. However, with the global impact that Disney has, it is very likely that its theme park metaverse may take off very soon.
