Duolingo’s CEO, Luis von Ahn, has announced a plan to make artificial intelligence (AI) a main part of how the company operates.
In a message sent to staff and later posted on LinkedIn on April 28, he announced that the company will start reducing its use of outside contractors for tasks that AI can manage.
Von Ahn made it clear that this change is not about cutting jobs or replacing employees. Instead, he said the goal is to let people spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time working on creative projects and solving harder problems.

An example he pointed to was the way Duolingo recently used AI to create learning content. In the past, building out lessons took a lot of manual effort and would have taken years to grow.
Von Ahn explained that simply adjusting current systems would not be enough. In many cases, Duolingo will need to rebuild processes from the beginning to make the most of AI. He also mentioned that some things, such as helping AI understand the company’s existing code, will take time.
The rollout of these changes will happen step by step. Some older systems will stay in place until new AI tools are ready. Duolingo will also closely monitor to ensure that the faster pace of work does not compromise the quality of what learners receive.
OpenAI recently announced that the company added new features to its AI chatbot, ChatGPT. What are they? Read the full story.
