Elon Musk’s xAI Debuts Grok 3 with Colossus Supercomputer

Elon Musk’s xAI has launched Grok 3, a new artificial intelligence (AI) model backed by a massive computing system.

A key highlight was “Colossus”, a network of 200,000 GPUs that powers Grok 3’s training. The development process took place in two stages: 122 days of training on 100,000 GPUs, followed by another 92 days as the system expanded to full capacity.

According to xAI's announcement on X, the team noted that setting up this infrastructure was more challenging than designing the AI itself.

Grok 3 performed well in AI benchmark tests. The base version, without added reasoning features, achieved strong results in math, science, and coding assessments. A previous test model, known as “Chocolate”, was revealed to be an early version of Grok 3.

A specialized version, called “Reasoning Beta”, includes additional processing for complex problem-solving. It reached a 93% score on a top math benchmark, outperforming other leading models, which scored below 87%.

xAI also introduced DeepSearch, a research tool that gathers and summarizes online information, much like existing products from OpenAI and Google.

In the coming weeks, xAI plans to roll out a voice feature, which Musk says will go beyond simple text-to-speech and provide a more natural-sounding AI voice. Developers will also get API access and tools for audio transcription.

Currently, X Premium Plus subscribers can use Grok 3, while more advanced versions will be available through a separate app or on Grok.com.

Meanwhile, the open-source AI model OpenThinker-32B was said to rival DeepSeek's performance. What were its benchmark test results? Read the full story.
