Agama's leadership is expected to enhance regulatory clarity, boost investor confidence, and drive economic growth, particularly in the crypto sector.
Nathaniel Luz, CEO of Flincap, an over-the-counter crypto exchange, expressed optimism about Agama’s appointment, anticipating improvements in the licensing processes for crypto platforms in Nigeria. This, Luz believes, is crucial for ensuring operational stability and compliance within the sector.
Additionally, Lucky Uwakwe, chair of the Blockchain Industry Coordinating Committee of Nigeria (BICCoN) and founder of SaBi Exchange, praised Agama's experience in blockchain and capital markets. He considers Agama’s appointment beneficial for both the SEC and the financial ecosystem:
We expect that his administration will separate the baby from the bath water and show that the crypto industry has several exciting benefits for the country. We need to prove to the whole world that we are open for crypto business despite the issues that some exchanges might have experienced in the country.
Uwakwe's mentioned experiences include the legal issues that Binance faces in Nigeria, being accused of facilitating $26 billion of "suspicious" transactions.
The Nigerian government officially invited Binance to discuss the allegations; however, during these meetings, two executives of the crypto exchange were detained and now face multiple charges related to money laundering.
One of the executives, Nadeem Anjarwalla, managed to escape custody and was later found in Kenya, now facing extradition back to Nigeria.
In this context, the community looks forward to policies that distinguish legitimate crypto activities from illegal ones, which would help promote a healthy and thriving crypto ecosystem.
