So, in this SecuX W20 review, we'll see if this cold wallet succeeds at being a safe and user-friendly option, as well as how it compares to industry giants like Ledger and Trezor.

Put shortly, SecuX offers high security with its CC EAL5+ security certification. It’s designed to safely store crypto and NFTs with full privacy and ownership. Beyond being safe, it also has a lot to offer in terms of portability and flexibility. Let's look into all that and more further in my review!

What is the SecuX W20 Wallet?

The more crypto you hold, the more attractive your assets become, but cold wallets keep your private keys offline,^[1] which helps to reduce the risk of hacking and malware. It's like keeping a large sum of money in a high-security vault rather than in your pocket. This is exactly what SecuX W20 claims to offer:

Vault-grade Hardware Wallet for NFT and Crypto

SecuX was founded in 2018 with the goal of providing secure and user-friendly hardware wallets. SecuX W20 was introduced shortly after the company’s launch. Since then, it has been regularly updated to improve its functionality and security.

While early versions focused primarily on security protocols, recent updates were mostly about mobile compatibility and the overall usability of the wallet.

As of writing, it supports over 10,000 cryptocurrencies, including popular coins like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and a variety of ERC-20 tokens. This broad range of SecuX W20 supported coins ensures that users can manage a diverse portfolio with ease. And there is even more –  you can also keep your NFTs in this SecuX wallet since it’s not just for the usual cryptocurrencies but for digital collectibles as well.

You can create up to 500 accounts and manage your assets in separate wallets for different purposes, whether it's for various tokens or dividing your personal and business assets. Setting up these accounts via the SecuX mobile app or SecuXess web platform is quite simple.

SecuX W20 Review: PROS

So far in this SecuX W20 review, I’ve already introduced some of its key features, but let's look deeper into the advantages of using this SecuX wallet.

Enhanced Security

To compete with other well-known cold wallets like Ledger Flex or Trezor Safe 5, it’s crucial to enhance security to reach the highest levels of safe storage. I can say that SecuX is doing a decent job regarding this by implementing the following features:

• Certified CC EAL5+

SecuX W20 comes with an Infineon SLE Solid Flash CC EAL5+ Secure Element Chip, a military-level security chip. What exactly does this mean?

CC EAL5+ refers to the “Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation” at Assurance Level 5, signifying that the product has undergone rigorous testing and complies with internationally recognized cybersecurity standards,^[2] ensuring robust protection against tampering and attacks.

In other words, this certification adds an extra layer of trust and peace of mind, making sure your assets are protected with top-tier security measures. While the newest models now usually implement CC EAL6+ certified element chips, this one is still a decent choice.

• 24-Word Recovery Seed (BIP39 Standard)

SecuX W20 wallet uses the BIP39 standard for recovery seeds, which consists of a 24-word mnemonic phrase. The BIP39 standard is widely used across hardware wallets, providing compatibility across different wallet providers in case of emergency.

If your device is lost, damaged, or stolen, you can restore your wallet with these recovery words and access your funds on a compatible device. Thus, it's essential to store this seed phrase securely and offline.

If you are not very good at taking notes on paper or protecting them, you can also buy XSEED to secure your recovery seeds, a physical backup tool offered by SecuX. It's resistant to fire, water, and tampering, making it highly durable in case of external damage.

• Hidden Wallet

One of the most important and unique features of SecuX W20 is the possibility of creating hidden wallets, which are secret wallets parallel to the one you already have, but in a non-visible way.

You can access a hidden wallet only with an additional passphrase (also known as the 25th recovery word), which you create yourself and is separate from the 24-word recovery phrase provided by the device.

I hear you asking, “What is the point of a 25th word? I already have 24 of them.” Because in this way, you add an extra level of protection for your wallet. Thus, even if someone gains access to your recovery seed, they still need this passphrase to acces your funds.

You can set up as many hidden wallets as you like. However, you cannot use the same passphrase for all due to security concerns and limitations. That's why each wallet needs a separate passphrase. Later on in this SecuX W20, I will explain how to set up a hidden wallet step by step.

• Dynamic PIN Entry

To access your assets, you'll also need a PIN that you create when setting up the device for the first time. The SecuX W20 features dynamic PIN entry to prevent screen capture malware or shoulder-surfing.

Each time you unlock the device, the numbers on the touchscreen are randomized, so they don’t appear in the typical 1-9 layout.

Therefore, even if someone attempts to steal your device, they won’t be able to use your PIN and thus cannot access your funds. Also, the device will perform an automatic reset after 5 unsuccessful PIN entries.

As I mentioned earlier in this SecuX W20 review, this cold wallet supports over 10,000 coins and tokens, offering significant flexibility, particularly for those interested in more niche and emerging tokens.

This extensive range of SecuX W20 supported coins is made possible through multi-chain support, which allows it to operate across multiple blockchain networks. This SecuX wallet supports over 300 blockchains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, Polygon, Ripple, and Stellar.

Thanks to this approach, SecuX W20 allows you to interact with multiple ecosystems and diversify investments without needing separate wallets for each blockchain.

Large Color Display Touchscreen

SecuX W20 has a 2.8-inch color touchscreen with a user-friendly interface. Compared to other hardware wallets in the market, it offers a more intuitive experience. It actually looks a lot like some of the first touchscreen smartphones.

The large display makes it pretty easy to navigate through the wallet and also helps reduce errors when managing assets across multiple blockchains, making it particularly beneficial for users who handle high volumes of transactions.

The touchscreen's responsiveness, combined with its clear layout, ensures a seamless experience for both beginners and seasoned traders.

Dual-Connectivity

One of the standout features of the SecuX W20 is its Bluetooth compatibility. This allows users to connect their wallets wirelessly to mobile devices, making the wallet more suitable for on-the-go use because you don’t have to rely on a USB connection to interact with your assets.

Moreover, with Bluetooth, you can use the SecuX mobile app on your iOS or Android device to send/receive crypto, view your portfolio, and sign transactions.

Thus, this feature offers more than just flexibility; it also enhances usability. Whether managing assets at home on your desktop or traveling, SecuX W20 ensures you never lose control of your assets without sacrificing security.

However, it also has a USB Micro-B connection available. When connected with a cable, you can charge the device at the same time, too.

dApp Integrations

SecuX W20 WalletConnect and MetaMask integrations allow users to engage with DeFi platforms, decentralized exchanges (DEXs), and other blockchain-based applications while maintaining the security of a hardware wallet.

WalletConnect is a popular protocol for connecting wallets to dApps by scanning a QR code. You can securely sign transactions and keep your private keys offline with your SecuX W20 and interact with DeFi protocols such as Uniswap, Aave, or Compound.

MetaMask is another way to interact with dApps and one of the most widely used Ethereum wallets. The SecuX W20 can be integrated with MetaMask, allowing you to manage your Ethereum-based assets, including ERC-20 tokens and NFTs, using both wallets more seamlessly.

You can approve and sign transactions directly from your hardware wallet, which is considered one of the most secure ways to interact with dApps.

SecuX W20 Review: CONS

Now that I’ve covered all the good parts of this SecuX W20 review, I think it’s time to check the drawbacks.

Fewer Software Integrations

SecuX W20 falls short regarding the number of software integrations compared to other cold wallet options in the market. For instance, besides MetaMask and WalletConnect, Ledger wallets also support MyEtherWallet (MEW), Binance DEX, and more. These integrations make it easier to manage assets across multiple platforms and interfaces.

Though, while using SecuX W20 for interacting with DeFi applications, staking services, and dApps is a bit more limiting, you'll still be able to utilize your hardware wallet with a decent variety of different dApps given that WalletConnect offers pretty wide support.

Limited NFT Management

I know I said that SecuX W20 supports NFTs, and I wasn’t lying; it does. However, there’s a catch. While SecuX has introduced NFT support to its devices, the feature is still in its early stages. Thus, its NFT management capabilities are somewhat limited.

For instance, while it allows you to view and store NFTs, more advanced functions like in-app trading, detailed metadata display, or direct integration with popular NFT marketplaces are not yet supported.

That said, if NFT management is a primary goal for you, the SecuX W20 may not be the top choice, but SecuX also offers a model called Nifty, which is a cold wallet made particularly for NFT enthusiasts.

Relatively Bulky Design

To be honest, I like the design of SecuX W20, but I understand that some may find it bulkier, especially compared to wallets like Ledger Nano X, which is lighter and slimmer with a wide range of colors you can choose from.

SecuX W20 has only a black color option, and due to its large touchscreen, it’s almost twice as big compared to others. Even the ones with a touchscreen, like Ledger Flex, are lighter and slimmer than this SecuX wallet.

Even though the wallet's material is very promising, made from aluminum and plastic, it may still not be safe in case of drops or impacts because it is also heavier.

If you want a huge touchscreen, design and weight can become a secondary factor in your decision. But if not, you may want to consider other options for better portability.

Pricing/Fees

Being priced at $99, SecuX W20’s price is relatively affordable compared to other hardware wallets on the market, at least among those with similar features.

However, SecuX also offers a more affordable version, W10, which lacks many of the features of SecuX W20, as well as the more elevated version, v20, which offers most of the same features, but you'll need to pay an additional $40 (seems like mainly for the design and the material).

By the way, note that SecuX W20 doesn’t charge you for transactions. The fees you pay are directly related to your trading platform and the network on which you're transacting.

What Comes in the SecuX W20 Package?

SecuX W20 comes with a package that contains 5 pieces, including:

I’ll explain how to set up your wallet later on in this SecuX W20 review, but users have noted that the quick start guide is quite helpful as well.

SecuXess and SecuX Mobile App

SecuXess and the SecuX mobile app are essential tools that allow you to interact with your SecuX W20 device seamlessly and securely.

SecuXess is a web-based platform accessible through Google Chrome, enabling you to send and receive cryptocurrencies, manage your accounts, and view your portfolio. You can connect to SecuXess using either a USB or Bluetooth connection, offering flexibility that the mobile app does not provide.

On the other hand, the SecuX mobile app is designed for on-the-go asset management. Available for both iOS and Android devices, it allows you to connect to your wallet via Bluetooth, eliminating the need for a physical connection. This wireless option, combined with the wallet’s long battery life, enhances flexibility.

Additionally, the mobile app integrates with WalletConnect, which I mentioned earlier in this SecuX W20 review. It helps you to interact with dApps securely and easily. Even though SecuXess does not offer the same functionality as the mobile app, SecuX has announced that the desktop app version is on the way, too.

How to Use SecuX W20?

Throughout this SecuX W20 review, we've discussed how secure and user-friendly it is. I think you'll agree with me on that when I show you how to set up your SecuX wallet step by step and activate the hidden wallet.

How to Set Up SecuX W20?

Do note that you'll have to charge your device for at least 2 hours before using it for the first time. If your battery is full, let’s get started!

You can turn on your wallet by pressing the power button located at the bottom of the device. Once you release it, a welcome message will appear on the screen. Tap [GET STARTED] on the touchscreen to continue.

Avoid using birthdays, special dates, or repeating/sequential numbers, and choose a 4-8 digit PIN. Then, tap [NEXT] on the touchscreen.

Set a 1-15 character device name that will be displayed during Bluetooth and USB connections.

If you are restoring or importing from an existing wallet, select [NO] to use your recovery words. If setting up a new wallet, select [YES] for the system to provide a new seed phrase.

If you're creating a new wallet, the device will generate your 24 recovery words and display 6 of them at a time. You need to write them down in the correct order on your recovery sheets within the package. When you ensure you wrote all of them in order, press [NEXT].

The device will randomly ask you 24 multiple-choice questions to verify you have all the words right. Choose the right answers for each. If you fail more than 5 questions, the device will automatically go back and generate a new recovery seed phrase.

After that, you'll be all done and ready to manage your portfolio in your new SecuX W20 wallet.

Conclusions

Even though choosing a proper hardware wallet depends on your priorities and expectations, based on everything I've covered in this SecuX W20 review, I can say that it is a pretty solid option. It has strong security features, from Common Criteria certification to hidden wallets (which is a unique property not all cold wallets offer).

It also has a huge touchscreen that you can easily check and approve transactions. Coupled with dual connectivity and long-lasting battery features, it gives you the benefit of always being in control of your assets, even when traveling.

However, despite its many strengths, SecuX W20 falls short in a couple of areas compared to other options available in the market, like Ledger Flex and Trezor Safe 5. While the wallet supports integrations with MetaMask and WalletConnect, it lacks broader support that others offer. Additionally, its NFT management is limited, not only in terms of the number but also in the depth of its management features.
