What is Astar?
The Astar token or ASTR is the native utility token powering the Astar Network. The latter is a Web3 infrastructure with integrated EVM, WASM, and Layer 2 solutions on Polkadot. To put it simply, it connects Polkadot with Layer 1 blockchains like Ethereum.
It has several use cases. Firstly, the Astar token serves as a governance token. This means that network participants who hold ASTR can vote on proposals. Secondly, besides traditional network staking, the Astar coin allows holders to participate in dApp staking. Holders can stake their ASTR on dApps and earn crypto rewards. dApp staking also incentivizes dApp developers.
There is a total supply of 7,000,000,000 ASTR. This means that the ASTR price might increase as there are fewer tokens. The tokens have been allocated as follows:
- 30% - Early Supporters;
- 20% - 2021 Parachain Auction;
- 10% - Development;
- 10% - Foundation;
- 10% - Early Financial Backers;
- 5% - Team;
- 5% - Parachain Auction Reserve;
- 5% - On-Chain DAO;
- 5% - Marketing.

Who Developed Astar?
The Astar crypto project’s whitepaper was published in March 2020. Its authors are Takumi Yamashita, Sota Watanabe, and Kim Hoon.
It was initially launched under the name Plasm Network and was later rebranded into the Astar Network.
