What is Radicle?
The Radicle coin or RAD is the official currency powering Radicle - a blockchain-based alternative to GitHub. It’s running on Ethereum.
RAD has several use cases, however, it mainly serves the functions of a governance token. In other words, all RAD holders are eligible to participate in the voting process that can change the future development of the project.
Additionally, RAD grants exclusive bonuses and discounts to its holders.
There is a max cap of 100,000,000 Radicle coins. This could mean that as the RAD coins become more scarce, the Radicle price will increase. RAD coins have been distributed as follows:
- 50% - Treasury;
- 20% - Early Investors;
- 19% - Core Team;
- 5% - Radicle Foundation;
- 3.75% - Liquidity Pool;
- 2% - Seeders Program;
- 0.25% - Radicle Reserves.
RAD coins were launched in 2021.
Anyone can acquire Radicle coins via major exchanges. You can find our recommended choices above this section.
Since RAD is a cryptocurrency, its price tends to fluctuate. In order to keep up to date, you can have a more in-depth look at the Radicle price history or the current RAD price on the graph above.
What are the Main Features of Radicle?
Radicle is a blockchain-based collaboration platform where users can work together in a completely decentralized manner. It’s primarily used for decentralized application (dApp) development.
The Radicle crypto project is entirely open-source. This means that the codebase is publicly available for anyone to review and contribute to.
Git is the backbone of Radicle. Its core protocols are built on Git.
The technology behind Radicle that enables decentralized collaboration is called Radicle Link. It’s a Peer-2-Peer (P2P) replication protocol.
Radicle Link is centered around collaborative coding. This means that developers can safely share their code with others without having to sacrifice decentralization.
Data is shared between users with the help of the gossip layer. In other words, users keep redundant copies of data locally and then share them with the network.
As mentioned above, Radicle Link is built on Git. This means that all of its data is stored on monorepo - a code repository on Git.
Radicle uses a kind of bazaar model that was popularized by Linux. It entails a type of collaboration style where developers host not just their own code but also code that’s not theirs simply because they find it intriguing. It also allows for funding projects by third parties.
As discussed in the What is Radicle section, Radicle is deployed on the Ethereum network. This means that the platform operates using a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism.
It’s important to note that Radicle’s Ethereum integration happened in early 2021 which is almost 3 years later after the development of Radicle started.
This integration brought the smart contract system and a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) now known as Radicle DAO. Most importantly, this update introduced the RAD coin.
Radicle doesn’t rely on third-party components such as oracles to keep it running. It’s entirely permissionless and trustless.
Other important features of the Radicle platform include Radicle Orgs, Radicle DAO, an exclusive attestation system, and NFT support.
Radicle Orgs are a type of sub-organizations for smaller communities within the Radicle platform.
Radicle DAO is a decentralized autonomous organization built specifically for governing the Radicle crypto project. It’s 100% community-driven. Governance rights are granted to RAD coin holders who can vote on proposals. This gives the power to community members in deciding the future of Radicle.
The attestation system refers to a type of link between the creator of a project and their Ethereum address, in turn, creating a Radicle ID. This greatly improves security and generates a directory of creators.
NFT support is exactly what it sounds like. Radicle allows users to create their own NFTs on the platform as well as participate in NFT trading.
One of the primary goals of the project is to remove the need for intermediaries in collaborative environments.
Radicle aims to provide a type of collaboration platform that users can use freely without the fear of being censored or shut down by the central authority. This is something that’s prevalent in centralized platforms such as GitHub.
Who Developed Radicle?
The idea behind the Radicle crypto project was born in 2018 by Monadic. The latter is a software company located in Berlin, Germany. Monadic was co-founded by entrepreneurs Alexis Sellier and Eleftherios Diakomichalis.
Radicle’s beta version was launched in November 2020. At this time, the beta only supported iOS and Linux operating systems.
It’s important to note that Radicle is not owned by any company. Monadic launched Radicle as an independent open-source project. This means that anyone can contribute to its development.
Some of Radicle’s core investors include Electric Capital, Parafi Capital, and Placeholder, among others.
Crypto-centered venture capital firms NFX and Galaxy hosted a seed round for Radicle in 2021. They managed to raise around 12,000,000 US Dollars for the project.
