HTML code Tag: Main Tips

  • The
element usually contains fragments of HTML code (or code of other languages) and styles them differently than the rest of the text.
  • Browsers display the content of HTML
tags by applying the default monospaced font.
  • The
and <samp> elements are used for creating examples or snippets of HTML codes.
  • HTML
tags must be closed.

How code Works

HTML
tag changes the styling of its content to make computer code fragments easier to identify.

Example

  Default style for code element

    code {
        font-family:monospace;
    }

In the HTML code example above, you can compare two types of text styling. First, you see plain text as usual. After the HTML line break, the
tags enclose a part of computer code.

Note: when you want to display code in HTML blocks, it is best to apply a combination of
and
to preserve indentation and line breaks.
