About the Company
Altcoin Trader cryptocurrency exchange was founded in 2014 by a team of experienced computer programmers at Netspace, a South African internet company. The team was led by Richard de Sousa, who cited his poor user experience on the Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox as one of the reasons the team was persuaded to establish their crypto exchange. Altcoin Trader crypto exchange became the first South African cryptocurrency exchange. It is headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Altcoin Trader was launched to the public in 2015. Originally it offered Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Namecoin. In 2015, the platform listed Ethereum’s native token Ether (ETH). It went ahead to add zCash and Dashcoin. Currently, it is offering to trade from the South African Rand to more than 20 cryptocurrencies.
In 2017, the platform became the second-highest African cryptocurrency exchange by volume. The mainstream media attention to the increasing cryptocurrency prices played a role in boosting Altcoin Trader volume.
In July 2019, the company announced that it would partner with retailers in South Africa to offer trading in gold and silver on their platform.
In April 2019, Altcoin Trader experienced a security breach. Their system went down to public use for 24 hours. The platform acknowledged the attack but stated that no user funds were stolen and that all the vulnerabilities were identified and secured.
