Markets
The Gate.io crypto prices are presented by real-time market capitalization and professional trend analysis. The platform calculates the prices by taking the global trading volume and using the average price formula.
It’s a crypto-crypto exchange, meaning all Gate.io trading pairs are between cryptocurrencies, including stablecoins. Users can deposit or withdraw their digital assets. There are no deposit fees. Withdrawal fees may differ depending on the cryptocurrency used.
Some of the features available on the Gate.io crypto exchange may only be accessed on the Web version of the platform and are expected to be implemented on the mobile app in the foreseeable future.
There are three categories of coins on the Gate.io cryptocurrency exchange:
- Bitcoin
- Altcoins
- Coins (dApps)
Gate.io provides data on the Bitcoin market dominance compared to the altcoins. Like many blockchain-based exchanges, Gate.io has its own token, GT. Users that hold GT tokens may be eligible for discounts on some of the Gate.io crypto fees.
The Gate.io spot market follows three order types:
- Limit orders – users set their preferred buying and selling prices and are matched accordingly;
- Iceberg orders – trading for large orders with hidden true volume; the Gate.io crypto fees for hidden order handling is 0.2% of the overall volume;
- Immediate or Cancel (IOC) – all or part of the order volume is fulfilled immediately. If this is not possible, the unfulfilled part of the order is canceled.
The Gate.io spot market enables the grid trading strategy, which is popular in volatile markets like crypto. Traders can opt for an AI-generated Smart Grid or create their own manual grid on the Gate.io crypto exchange.
There are 17 tiers to the spot and futures trading fees system, going from VIP 0 to VIP 16. The fees are determined by the 30-day Gate.io volume and use the maker/taker model. In VIP 0, the volume does not exceed $60,000, and the fees are 0.2% for both market makers and takers. GT token holders can get a discount and pay 0.15%.
Starting with VIP 10, with a Gatio.io trade volume of at least $100 million, market makers that hold GT tokens are not required to pay any fees, while the taker fees are progressively reduced. At VIP 16, the required 30-day volume must be at least $3 billion, and the makers and takers pay 0.055% and 0.065%, respectively, if they don’t hold any GT tokens.
The Gate.io derivatives market offers options trading. Short-term options and simulation trading for call/put options that are set to expire in 1, 4, or 24 hours are available. Gate.io crypto fees of 0.4% apply for short-term options handling, and the maximum buying amount is limited.
The Gate.io futures market also uses a 17-tier model. However, there are no discounts for GT token holders. Similarly to the spot market, at VIP 0, the Gate.io trade volume for 30 days is under $60,000. At VIP 16, the required volume must be at least $3 billion.
While the taker fees are reduced progressively at each of the 17 tiers for market takers, market makers are grouped into three fee ranges:
- VIP 0 – VIP 5: 0.015%
- VIP 6 – VIP 9: 0.010%
- VIP 10 – VIP 16: 0.000%
Customers can trade on perpetual markets using ETF-leveraged tokens. They offer 3x and 5x leverage on long bullish and short bearish tokens. Users are required to pay daily Gate.io exchange fees of 0.1% for leveraged token management.
Gate.io crypto exchange users can participate in copy trading. It’s a mechanism where a user copies the same positions that another, usually more prominent trader has taken. A strategy bot can be used to preview potential trading strategies. 5% of the profits earned via the bot go towards the strategy provider.

About the Company
Gate.io was initially founded as the Chinese exchange Bter.com in 2013. Following the change of policy regarding cryptocurrencies in China in 2017, the team, led by Lin Han, announced that the project would be rebranded as the Gate.io cryptocurrency exchange.
Prior to the rebranding, in February 2015, the Bter exchange was hacked. During the attack, more than 7,000 BTC, then valued at around $1.75 million, were taken from the cold wallets belonging to the exchange.
Initially, the platform used the yuan as its main currency for fiat-to-crypto trading. However, since the rebranding, the exchange has shifted to a predominantly crypto-crypto trading model. The Gate.io crypto price of any token can be traded against the USDT stablecoin.
GateChain is a public chain that was launched in 2019. In addition to the Gate.io cryptocurrency exchange, the company also runs a blockchain project incubation and discovery program. Gate.io Startup is used to support new projects on GateChain.
In 2020, Gate.io started a GT token buyback model. It uses 20% of the company’s annual profits to buy back GT tokens which are then burned. This is done to ensure the stability of the Gate.io crypto price.
In 2021, the daily Gate.io trade volume averaged at $2 billion for the spot market and $3.3 billion for derivatives trading. Additionally, the company’s market capitalization reached $2.75 trillion, increasing by more than 250% from its 2020 performance.
In January 2022, the Gate.io cryptocurrency exchange surpassed 10 million registered users. According to the quarterly report, in Q2 2022, the average biweekly Gate.io volume was $40 billion in the perpetuals market.
Lin Han is the CEO of Gate.io. Prior to founding the exchange, Han received a Master’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from Tsinghua University in China.
